New Trichotomy EP - “All Things Impossible”
Trichotomy have been working on a new project…something quite different to our usual releases. It's based around a suite of short pieces of music, inspired by a selection of poetry written by the Melbourne poet Ashley Capes.
It began as a commission. Ashley invited us to create some music for his poems. We read the poems, listened to his narration, and recorded spontaneous improvisations to each of them.
They were short tracks, one to two minutes long, but we loved the short intensity present in each of them. Working in this ultra-short form was a new challenge for us.
So we sent a bunch of the recordings to our good friend Paul Underwood - who has designed all of the Trichotomy album covers over the years. We asked Paul to create some visual work to complement each of the pieces. Rather than filming new material, Paul drew from a personal archive of footage collected over several years: waves lapping against the shore, clouds in time-lapse, raindrops on a tent, fireworks in slow motion, a crow silhouetted against a window, jellyfish drifting through an aquarium, and other small, happenstance moments.
Placed alongside the music, these everyday images take on new meaning. Paul shaped each short film through editing, colour, pacing, focus and duration, creating a parallel visual experience rather than just accompanying the music.
The resulting EP is a collection of 15 short pieces of music, poetry and moving image. Selected tracks will be available on streaming platforms, but the entire multimedia collection will be on Bandcamp only.
All Things Impossible is something distinctly new: a collection of short, intimate, and strangely alluring works that invite close listening and watching.
